Canada Post letter postage, explained simply. Rates effective January 13, 2025.

International postage from Canada

A standard letter to most countries outside Canada and the USA costs $3.65 up to 30 g, and $5.21 over 30 g up to 50 g. One Canada Post international stamp ($3.65) covers the basic letter. Delivery standard is 4–7 business days.
Size limits — standard: max 245 × 156 × 5 mm and 50 g · oversize: max 380 × 270 × 20 mm and 500 g · minimum 140 × 90 mm. Bigger or heavier than the oversize maximum is a parcel, not a letter.

Mailing with regular stamps

The $3.65 international stamp is the tidy option, but any combination totalling $3.65 works — three Permanent™ stamps come to $3.72, for instance. Use the combination finder to build the mix with the least overpay from what you have, including older denominations. Remember that Permanent™ stamps count as $1.24 each toward international postage, not as full international fare.

Write "AIR MAIL / PAR AVION" on the envelope (or use an airmail sticker) so the letter travels by air, and put your return address on the front, top-left — standard practice for international mail from Canada.

Questions

Is the rate the same for every country? For Letter-post, yes — one international rate covers most destinations, from the UK and France to Australia and Japan. The USA has its own lower rate.

How long does international letter mail take? The delivery standard is 4–7 business days, but real-world delivery to some countries runs longer. Letter-post has no tracking.

Can I send goods in a Letter-post envelope?Letter-post is meant for documents and paper goods. Merchandise to another country generally needs a parcel service with customs forms — and sending goods as "letters" risks delays or return.
