Letter weight estimator
Postage is priced by weight, but most people guess. Build your letter below — envelope, paper, extras — and get a realistic weight, plus the postage it implies for Canada, the USA and international mail.
Prices are by weight. Dimensions can also force oversize pricing — check with the envelope size checker.
Weights worth remembering
| Item | Typical weight |
|---|---|
| Sheet of A4/Letter paper (80 gsm) | ≈ 5 g |
| Standard envelope (DL/#10) | ≈ 8 g |
| Greeting card with envelope | ≈ 15–25 g |
| Gift card (plastic) | ≈ 5 g |
| 4 × 6 photo | ≈ 4 g |
| Two toonies in an envelope | ≈ 14 g — and the thickness may force oversize pricing |
No scale at all? Two honest tricks: weigh ten identical letters on a kitchen scale and divide by ten, or take one assembled letter to the post office counter and ask — then you know your template weight for every future mailing. The boundaries that matter most are 30 g and 50 g; if your estimate lands within a few grams of a boundary, round up and pay the higher band rather than risk a surcharge. When you're ready, the calculator turns any weight into exact postage and a stamp combination.
